URiM Scholarship

Dear students,

Thank you for applying to SUNY Downstate for an Emergency Medicine elective! I am reaching out to our September students with a new opportunity. We have scholarships available for students who identify as Under-represented in Medicine. Please see description below. If you believe you qualify, please send us a description of your unique circumstances and how this perspective will contribute to SUNY Downstate. You may respond all to this email. (I will personally be on vacation but will be checking email regularly. My team Ms. Saunders and Dr. Delgado are cc’d here.)

Details:

SUNY Downstate has a mission to meet the needs of Brooklyn residents by training and retaining physicians to provide care in our region. We aim to provide innovative and excellent patient care while training the next generation of physicians and advancing patient-centered research while serving our culturally diverse and medically under-served patient population. In order to attract trainees who reflect the diversity of our surrounding communities, we offer a scholarship for students who identify as under-represented in medicine.

You must identify as a student from a Disadvantaged Background: from families with an annual income below established low-income thresholds AND/OR from a social, cultural, or educational environment such as that found in certain rural or inner-city environments that have demonstrably presented barriers to navigating admissions or access to medical careers. In the VSLO application (personal statement), please explain your unique circumstances and how this perspective will contribute to SUNY Downstate.

Best,

Dr. Linda Fan
