Non-Clinical Elective (for example, Reading, Seminar, Self-Study, Directed Reading Research). Learning Competencies-Patient Care (including clinical skills) & Medical knowledge Learning Objectives: 1) Manage injuries and illness in the austere environment. 2) Familiarity with the community scene, injuries and illnesses in the wilderness setting. 3) Introduction to wilderness survival. 4)Evacuation of the injured patient from the wilderness setting. 5) Triage and scene management of mass casualty incidents. Student Performance Assessment Methods: 1) Direct Observation 2) Simulated wilderness patient scenerios. There is no direct patient contact. There is no on call. The first weekend will be free. There will be a trip to the wilderness setting starting on the second Wednesday of the course and running until Sunday morning.
