Course Description: This elective aims to impart practical knowledge and experience in disaster medicine during the COVID epidemic. Through their work, students will also gain an understanding of the tasks required to prepare a large healthcare facility for disasters, such as a pandemic, a natural disaster, or an act of terror, and in how to mitigate such disasters if they arrive. Students will encounter patients who are COVID positive requiring a spectrum of care, from asymptomatic to intubated. They will understand complex underlying chronic diseases, including ESRD, heart failure, and diabetes, and how they act as risk factors during the COVID pandemic. Source Materials: Materials will include those provided by the Disaster Management team, including novel and relevant journal articles in disaster medicine to be assigned to students. Textbook :Clottone’s Disaster Medicine 2nd Edition Journals: Prehospital and Disaster Medicine Course offered: 2 or 4 weeks Reading elective This course can be taken concurrently with another elective. Curricular Goals: Develop a comprehensive knowledge of the fundamentals of disaster planning and mitigation. Develop a systematic approach to tracking patients and analyzing data during a pandemic, and gain an understanding of how to integrate public health measures into active clinical practice for future disasters. Gain knowledge of the federal, state and city pandemic response and obstacles in the supply chain and resource management. Procedure for evaluating students: Formal presentations.
