No exceptions! Clerkship Description: During this 4-week rotation, students will evaluate patients as they present with a variety of acute illnesses and injuries. Students should learn to the establish priorities in the care of acutely ill patients, with emphasis on assessing and stabilizing respiratory, circulatory and basic metabolic functions. Additionally, students will learn to address the unique medical needs of an inner city population, which includes primary and preventive care. At the end of the clerkship, students are expected to achieve the following: 1) Acquire a chief-complaint driven history and physical examination, and derive an adequate differential diagnosis. 2) Appropriately order and interpret laboratory and radiological data. 3) Recognize and initiate care for critically ill patients. 4) Perform basic emergency procedures under close supervision. 5) Rapidly establish an alliance with patients and their families as they cope with the emotional trauma of emergencies, critical illness, and death. 6) Understand the role the emergency department (ED) plays in the healthcare system regardless of their medical specialty. 7) Understand the nature of the ED in terms of appropriate patient management and flow, its impact on patient expectations and societal needs, and its collaborative nature with other medical specialties. 8) Recognize critical and potentially life-threatening medical conditions and know the initial interventions needed to stabilize the patient. Grading is based on the following criteria: 1) Timely attendance at all assigned clinical shifts. Students are assigned fifteen 8-hour shifts (days/evenings/overnights) rotating through the different areas of the ED. 2) Mandatory attendance at all scheduled educational activities. 3) Clinical Performance (participation, professionalism and development of clinical competence, self-directed learning) 4) Completion of all course logs and follow-ups 5) NBME EM Advanced Clinical Examination 6) Case Presentation 7) Patient encounter note Hospital Sites: Kings County Hospital and Downstate Medical Center/University Hospital of Brooklyn Maimonides Medical Center Notes: This clerkship always starts on Monday – including holidays. Given the length of the rotation and the shift schedule, students should avoid taking the rotation at time when more than 4 days off are needed for ANY reason. (i.e. weddings, conferences, holidays, interviews). Schedule requests must be submitted to the department four weeks prior to the start of the clerkship. All sections will be closed once open on-line registration period ends. Any changes after that time will require clerkship director permission.
