Student Education

The Department of Emergency Medicine is comprised of teams of dedicated physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals committed to providing medical care to the rich diversity of people in Brooklyn, New York. The varied divisions afford students the chance to experience all aspects of the Department of Emergency Medicine. We believe that leaders never stop learning; therefore we devote a large amount of time and energy to student education. Our residents offer assistance to medical students through advising, individual tutoring, lectures, and hands-on workshops. We consistently receive positive feedback from medical schools, thanks to our student-friendly approach.

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Kings County Hospital and SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in an integrated department unified in providing excellent care to the residents of the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn. As a student rotating in the department you will notice the difference in patiant population and chief complaints reported in the emergency rooms.

As a SUNY Downstate student you will have the opportunity to take multiple electives within the emergency dept. Those courses include but are not limited to the following:

  • PEM
  • Ultrasound
  • Disaster Prep
  • Toxicology
  • Wilderness Medicine

We also offer courses at some of our affiliates which include Maimonides and Staten Island Hospital.
