Students seeking an in-depth experience in Pediatric Emergency Medicine may register for this elective for 2-weeks or 4 weeks. Students will evaluate acute medical and surgical problems in children under the supervision of a faculty member. Students will act as the primary care giver for selected patients and will be part of the resuscitation team caring for critically ill and injured children. During the four-week rotation, students will complete 120 clinical hrs (4 wks) and 64 clinical hrs (2wks) divided between 8hr- and 12hr- shifts in the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Department of Kings County Hospital Center and University Hospital of Brooklyn. Students who anticipate more than 4 days off (4wks) or 2 days off (2wks) for any reason (interviews, conferences, religious holidays, weddings etc) should not take during this time period. Student are required to attend a combination of lectures from the pediatric dept. and pediatric emergency medicine lecture series. These lectures will be useful to students considering future careers in any area of medicine. Course Learning Objectives: 1. To evaluate children in an acute care setting. 2. Recognizing common presentations of common illnesses in pediatrics. 3. Recognizing /identifying uncommon presentations of common illnesses. 4. Fine tune skills in focused history-taking and exam. 5. Hone interpersonal communication skills when interacting with families, especially during emergent/urgent situations. 6. Exposure to critically ill children. Students Performance Assessment Methods: 1. Clinical evaluations under direct observation by EM/PEM faculty including course director 2. Attendance to all required educational activities.
