N115 – Emergency Medicine Elective Course Description

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This elective is offered by the Emergency Medicine Department of SUNY-BROOKLYN and is open to eligible 1st and 2nd year medical students. The elective runs for 6 weeks, each period. It is designed to introduce pre-clinical students to the Emergency Medicine Department and Emergency Medicine as a specialty.

While students will not have a hands-on experience in patient care, they will have the unparalleled opportunity to observe the ongoing management of patients with a wide variety of pathology as well as the many phases of emergency care.

Students who are registered for the course will be expected to spend one evening per week in the clinical area, observing the attending and house staff as they carry out the many duties involved in emergency care. In addition, a series of six lectures will be given-one per week. Each student is also required to give a case presentation on a patient whose care was observed in the ED. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a suture lab where they will both learn and have hands-on experience.

At the beginning of the course, each student will be given a sign-in sheet, which must be presented to the attending in the clinical area that they are assigned. These sheets are proof of attendance.
