Students will attend lectures on important topics in medical toxicology. Class would be held twice per week for 2 hours for a total of 4 hours per week. There will be required readings and a 10 page paper. A final examination will be given on the last day. Grading will be H/HP/P/F. Students will attend the New York City Poison Center (Bellevue) monthly conference with Dr. Weiner on the first Thursday of the month from 1pm – 4pm in addition to lecture that day. Students will perform a 10 minute Power Point presentation summarizing their paper. Course Learning Objectives: 1. Understand the initial approach to management of a patient with an unknown poisoning. 2. Understand the roles, mechanisms, and evidence regarding different modes of GI decontamination. 3. Understand the mechanisms of action, clinical presentation and management of common toxins. 4. Have a rational approach to the evaluation of a patient with anion gap acidosis of unknown etiology. 5. Understand how toxins interact with the autonomic nervous system. Student’s Performance Assessment Methods: 1. Written exam 2. Paper 3. In class powerpoint presentation 4.
